Edwards is fifth, Hayden is tied for seventh and Spies is tied for 19th in the MotoGP standings after 10 races this season. Two-time reigning AMA Superbike champion Spies has made one career MotoGP start, this season at the British Grand Prix as an injury replacement for Loris Capirossi on the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team. AMA Superbike veteran Hacking is making his MotoGP debut as a replacement for injured fellow American John Hopkins.

•Colin Edwards: "I've never thought about Laguna as pressure (because it's a home race). I've got 40 or 50 people coming out to watch, stringing passes to. But at the same time, I've always performed a lot better under pressure. Laguna is the same. One thing about Laguna, it's physical. It's real physical. There's nowhere you can pull off a tear-off. You're just always cranking on the bike. Left-right, left-right, up-down. Physically, Laguna and Sachsenring, where we just came from, they're two of the most physical tracks because you don't have a second to do anything. Even the straightaways, you're going from left to right or right to left and setting up for what's coming up. You never have that 400 yards of straight road where you can reach up and grab a tear-off. It just doesn't happen."

•Nicky Hayden: "I'm excited to go to Laguna, even if we go there on a bit of a run of bad luck. Hopefully things will turn around for us; it would be a nice place to get everything to roll from Friday through to Sunday. Whatever happens, I'll just keep pushing. Laguna certainly has a special place in my heart. The track itself is like one big lap; it's not like all different sections. A lot of the turns lead into one another, so you've really got to put it all together. Like if you screw up the Corkscrew, you miss the next three or four corners. It's a very technical track, and I love it. Racing your home race is always a special deal and something I don't take lightly. The first couple of years I came to MotoGP, we didn't have a USGP, so I think that makes me cherish it, treasure it even more. I wouldn't say it's my home track as far as knowing it goes because the MotoGP guys have had three years there, so I don't think it has any advantage for me anymore. But that home crowd's got to be worth something. Last year we struggled. It was our worse place for tires all year. But I'm excited now because I've seen how much Michelin have improved at other tracks this year."

•Ben Spies: "I am really looking forward to this weekend. It will be awesome to ride the GP bike in front of all the American fans. I know it is going to be hard, as these guys are pretty good, and I have the added pressure of racing in the Superbike championship, as well. But I will be going for it, that's for certain! I have got one race under my belt in MotoGP, and I had a thorough test at Indianapolis that went really well, so now it is down to me to show what I can do!"

•Jamie Hacking: "I'm really excited about riding Kawasaki's Ninja ZX-RR in the USGP at Laguna Seca. We've just completed two days of testing with the bike in Japan, and I felt pretty comfortable straight away. It's an amazing machine. I can't believe how sophisticated the electronics package is on the bike. Already it feels like you can open the gas impossibly early out of the turns, but the data shows that it's actually possible to open the throttle even earlier. To do this requires some confidence in the electronics, and that confidence will only come with more track time on the bike. Roger Lee (Hayden) set the benchmark at this race last year with an outstanding 10th-place finish, so that's certainly given me something to aim for. Laguna is one of my best tracks, but I'm under no illusions how hard it's going to be. I'll be up against some of the best riders in the world on a bike on which I've only had limited testing time. If I come away from the weekend with a top-10 finish, then I'll be happy."
